Herring frye struggling due to drought

On Thursday Dec. 1, Yarmouth Division of Natural Resources Officers monitoring the herring run at Long Pond observed large amounts of juvenile herring (Frye) attempting to exit the pond to begin their yearly migration to sea.
Due to extreme drought this past summer and fall, the herring run that leads out into Swan Pond and ultimately into Nantucket Sound has been completely dried up and impassable.
Officers in an effort to save as many as possible, manually went into the run and scooped up juvenile herring into buckets and transported them to Swan Pond so they could continue this critical migration.
