Resources for Herring Count Organizers and Volunteers
The Conservation Commission, or “Cons Com” as it is often called, is a local town commission, made up of volunteers, who work with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to uphold the State of Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, MA General Laws Chapter 131, Section 40 and its regulations 310 Code of Massachusetts Regulations 10.00
Most work in or near wetlands and waterways requires Cons Com approval. Many towns employ a Conservation Agent who works with the Commission. Contact info for the Commission or the Agent can be found through Town Hall at the individual towns.
Alewife, Fisheries, or Natural Resources Committees
Some towns have created local boards and committees specifically to manage river herring in the town (for example, the Town of Brewster Alewife Committee) or to work on issues related to the natural resources of the town (for example, Wellfleet’s Natural Resources Advisory Board). Cape Cod Conservation District serves the citizens of Barnstable County in helping to address the resource concerns of its soil, water and other resources.
