’21 Mystic herring numbers jump out the water

The numbers are in: An estimated 550,000 river herring passed through the fish ladder at Mystic Lakes Dam in 2021.
This estimate comes from data collected through hundreds of volunteer hours to document the Mystic herring migration both in-person and online.
The Arlington-based Mystic River Watershed Association thanks the public for making invaluable contributions to this ecological restoration story.

The dramatic decline in the river-herring population in 2020 was thought to be a result of the 2016-2017 drought, when conditions led to fewer juveniles surviving to maturity that year.
Thes river herring numbers in 2021 represent the beginning of recovery for this population.
